Crabs live in the inter-tidal zone

Peter Jensen claimed this sign had
been a tortoise in Babylonia, and it was so figured there and in Egypt
4000 BC; although in the Egyptian records of about 2000 BC it was
described as Scarabaeus, the sacred emblem of immortality.
In the 12th century, an illustrated
astronomical manuscript shows it as a water beetle. Albumasar writes
of this sign in the work published in 1489 as a large crayfish. Bartschius
and Stanislaus Lubienitzki, in the 17th century, described it as a
lobster.

The Moon is always changing, not
even the same two nights in a row. It races around the Earth once
a "month," and as such we are familiar with her regularly

Origin
It was the ancient Assyrians who
first designated the crab as the symbol for Cancer, because they believed
the crab to carry its home on its back. In fact, it's merely his skeleton.
They were right in associating Cancers with being attached to their
homes, however.
The primary reason they chose the
crab is because the sun enters Cancer on the summer solstice, the
longest day of the year. The next day, it begins its backward motion
towards the equator. Therefore, as it moves forward through time,
it's moving backwards in the sky. This apparent paradox is perfectly
symbolized by the crab, which must move backwards in order to move
forwards.
The word itself is derived from the
Arabic "khan," which means resting place, and "keras,"
which refers to encircling arms. Put the two together, and they have
a picture of a person who places a high value on his home life, and
who is extremely caring.
In the 1970s there was a proposal
to rename the zodiac sign, as some astrologers felt that an imagined
association with the disease cancer was off-putting. Some people with
the sun sign of Cancer refer to themselves as "Moonchild"
instead, the sign being ruled by the Moon in astrology.
Cancer is ruled by the moon, which
presides over emotions (the tidal forces within us), home life, fertility,

Litoreus, Shore-inhabiting, is from
Manilius and Ovid. Astacus and Cammarus appear with various classic
writers. Nepa is from Cicero's De Finibus and the works of Columella,
Plautus, and Varro - all signifying Crab, Lobster, or Scorpion.
Kircher said that in Coptic Egypt
it was Κλαρια, the Bestia seu Statio
Typhonis, the Power of Darkness. Jérôme Lalande identified
this with Anubis, one of the Egyptian divinities commonly associated
with Sirius.

Cancer do not have bright star, because
Cancer failed to defeat Hercules, the gods did not give Cancer bright
stars to mark the constellation.
Galileo was the first to study its
stars with a telescope. He counted over forty members, putting
to rest the idea of its nebulosity and introducing the idea of star
clusters.
There are over three hundred stars in the Beehive. It has been
estimated that over a hundred of its stars are brighter than our Sun,
and in fact if the Sun were a member of this group, it would be a
very modest member indeed, at about 10.9 magnitudes.
Cancer is best noted among stargazers
as the home of Praesepe (M44), an open cluster also called the Beehive
Cluster or the Gate of Men, which contains the star ε Cancri.
The smaller, denser open cluster M67 can be found here as well. Beta
Cancri (β Cnc / β Cancri) is the brightest star in the constellation
Cancer. It also has the traditional name Altarf, also known as al-Tarf
(Arabic for "the tip"). It is approximately 290 light years
from Earth. Delta Cancri (δ Cnc / δ Cancri) is an orange
giant star approximetaly 136 light-years away in the constellation
Cancer. It has the traditional name Asellus Australis which in Latin
means "southern donkey". Since it is near the ecliptic,
it can be occulted by the Moon and very rarely by planets.
In 1876, the possibility that Delta
Cancri has a companion star was proposed.
Mercury in Cancer
Mercury is influenced by the Moon
in this sign. The thinking processes are not as objective and tend
to be influenced by personal biases and prejudices. The native may
not even be aware of these behavior patterns because they exist at
the subconscious level. Because the Moon is very receptive, this position
of Mercury is indicative of a very sharp memory, but the mind is not

Saturn is in detriment in this sign
according to medieval authors. This means that issues like duty and

Neptune in Cancer
Neptune was last in Cancer between
1901 and 1915. This generation was patriotic and willing to sacrifice

Pluto was last in Cancer from 1913
to 1938. According to Robert Schmidt, Pluto is the principle of alogos,
meaning that Pluto represents an aversion to the principle of logos.
Logos means to "go between & quot or ratio and proportion;.
In a sense it means that there is no "in between" or transfer
taking place. This intuitively leads to extremes and lack of compromise,
and proportion. Pluto was discovered in 1930, which means that it
was present in this sign at its discovery. The atom bomb is symbolic
of its absolute power and the cancerian drive for national security
based upon that power. People born with close aspects from personal
planets to Pluto in this sign will often experience power struggles
and fights based upon nationality and patriotism. They are a generation

In some cosmologies, Cancer is associated

Watery Trigon with Scorpio and Pisces. It is also one of the four

"House of the Moon", and this concept might originate from
an ancient belief that Moon was located here at the creation of the
world. Cancer is also the exaltation of Jupiter, and the traditional
astrology claims it is the triplicity of Mars, one of the three lesser
dignities which the modern astrology does not recognize.
Since Cancer is the opposite sign
of Capricorn, which is the domicile of Saturn and the exaltation of
Mars, Saturn naturally becomes detriment in Cancer, and Mars, although
has the dignity of triplicity, becomes fall.
Many modern astrologers consider
it to be significant that Pluto was discovered on the longitude of
20 degrees Cancer and the first atomic bomb was detonated at the moment
when Saturn reached this longitude. Saturn is said to become particularly
malefic in Cancer and Leo, for they are opposed to Saturn's own domiciles.
Richard Saunders writes in Astrological Judgment and Practice of Physic
(1677) that Black Plague of 1593 has been caused by transiting Saturn
in Cancer, breeding "Flegm, thin Water, and Melancholy mixt".
Each astrological sign is assigned
a part of the human body, viewed as the microcosmic counterpart of
the heavenly signs. Cancer rules the breasts and belly. Caesius likened
the sign to "the Breastplate of Righteousness" in Ephesians
VI:14.
Elisabeth and Reinhold Ebertin extended
this concept to that every single degree of 360 degrees of zodiac
correlates to a specific part of human anatomy. In their Anatomische
Entsprechungen der Tierkreisgrade (Anatomical Correspondences of the
Zodiac Degrees, 1949), the section about Cancer starts with the 1
degree of Cancer correlating to the sixth rib, ends with the 30 degree
of the sign correlating to the twelfth dorsal vertebra.
In the 1970s there was a proposal
to rename the zodiac sign, as some astrologers felt that an imagined
association with the disease Cancer was off-putting. Some people with
the sun sign of Cancer refer to themselves as "Moonchild"
instead, the sign being ruled by the Moon in astrology.
Mythology
Scholars believe that astrologers
later added the crab to the myth in order to have the Twelve Labors
of Hercules reflect the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac. While it
is difficult to associate all of Hercules' labors with the zodiac,
it is true that the crab figured in Hercules' Second Labor, and is
in fact the Second Sign of the Zodiac.
In any case, apparently for following its master’s command and
sacrificing its life, the crab was awarded with a heavenly home.
The Crab, The name comes from the Latin "cancer," means
crab. Cancer joined the dreaded Hydra in battle against Hercules.
It was only a bit part, but one which secured its immortality.
The later placement of the crab within
the zodiac is related to a minor chapter in Greek mythology.. Hercules
wanted to kill the many-headed Hydra, a great sea monster, living
in the marshes of Lerna. Hera, the goddess who sent Hercules to these
tasks, often encouraged his failure.
The swamps of Lerna was home of the
Hydra, an enormous water snake with nine heads (one of which was immortal),
and with breath that would kill on contact. With the help of
Athene, Hercules located the monster's lair, and the ensuing struggle
was a standoff. When one head was sliced off, another appeared
in its place. During his battle with Hydra, Hera commanded a nearby
crab to attack Hercules and draw his attention away. Then at Hydra's
plea, a giant crab emerged from the swamp and bit into Hercules' foot.
This act cost the crab its life, for Hercules abruptly crushed him.
Hercules promptly killed the animal and then cut off the Hydra's
immortal head, killing it as well. He then dipped his arrows
in the Hydra's blood. Impressed by its loyalty and courage, Hera placed
the crab's image in the night sky.
The slightest scratch from one of
these arrows would bring instant death to his enemies.
The Hydra had been a favorite to
Hera, and was equally honored by the goddess. Cancer itself is not
a brilliant constellation. However, at its heart is a lovely star
cluster, sometimes known in astronomy as the Beehive. The name derives
from the appearance of a swarm of stars in a dance of activity.
M44 (NGC 2632) is better known by
the name the Beehive Cluster, or the Latin equivalent, Praesepe, which
not only means a hive but also a crib, or manger. This is a
bright open cluster clearly visible to the naked eye on a dark enough
night, and best appreciated with binoculars or small scope.
One of the largest clusters, its 1.5 degree size is equivalent to
three full moons end-to-end. Its distance is calculated at between
520 - 590 light years. This grouping is so large it was well
- known in antiquity, when it was thought to be a nebula. The
cluster often served to predict the weather: if not crystal
clear inclement weather might be on the way.
In 1531 Halley's Comet was discovered
in this part of the sky.
In the summer of 1895, all of the
planets, except Neptune, congregated here--and extremely rare event.
Characteristics
On the downside: Clannish and
moody, attached to the past, a worrier and a clinger, jealousy.
Their good qualities include: Patient,
sensitive, romantic, sociable, and maternal. To identify their own
personal feelings and put selfishness aside will be their life’s

This star is a watery sign symbolized
